Investment gains were the principal driver of quarterly earnings growth
Second-quarter total revenue increased by $1.026B year over year to $4.274B. Net income increased by $570M to $1.255B, with a $657M after-tax increase in investment gains and losses and a $28M increase in after-tax investment income, partly offset by a $115M decline in after-tax property-casualty underwriting profit. Pretax net investment gains and losses were $1.308B versus $473M a year earlier.
