EV Strategic Realignment Charges Weigh on Profitability
GM recorded additional net charges of $2.3 billion in the three months ended June 30, 2026 related to its EV strategic realignment, including $1.3B for commercial negotiations with suppliers/JV partners, $1.1B of losses on contractual supply agreements, and $0.5B for compliance-related assets, net of $0.7B in cost-sharing recoveries. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, total net charges were $3.4 billion, with $2.5 billion expected to have a cash impact; management believes it has substantially completed recognition of material cash charges related to this realignment.
Tariff Environment Creates Estimated $2.5-3.5B EBIT-Adjusted Impact for 2026
Following a February 20, 2026 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that IEEPA did not authorize certain tariffs, GM recorded a $0.5 billion favorable adjustment in Q1 FY2026 for previously charged tariffs believed to be refundable. Management estimates the current tariff environment could impact 2026 full-year EBIT-adjusted by $2.5 billion to $3.5 billion, subject to change as tariff policy evolves.
GMNA Margin Expansion Despite Realignment Charges
GMNA EBIT-adjusted increased 42.7% YoY to $3,446M in Q2 FY2026, with EBIT-adjusted margin expanding to 8.6% from 6.1%, driven by favorable pricing from lean dealer inventories and decreased warranty and inventory-related costs, partially offsetting the EV charges embedded in Cost of Sales.
